Best for

Advanced backcountry skiers

Built in 2026 at 9,800 feet, Little Elk is the highest and most remote yurt in the Uinta Hut System, with easy access to high, open mountain skiing: tree-dotted slopes, wide-open faces, steeps, chutes and big alpine peaks. Advanced backcountry experience is recommended.

Access is 7 miles and 2,300 vertical feet from the winter trailhead on the Mirror Lake Highway, before the winter closure gate. The trail is typically packed by snowmobiles but can be deep powder after storms: about an hour by snowmobile, or 6 to 8 hours on skins. The route does cross some small pieces of avalanche terrain.

It sleeps 10, in four single and three double beds, with a wood-burning stove and oven, a full kitchen setup and a WAG outhouse. Little Elk is also one of the two high yurts where hut-to-hut trips begin.
