The historic Castle Peak Yurt was rebuilt in 2021 and sits at 9,800 feet in the Uintas. Lots of mellow, easygoing slopes make it a relaxed time in the mountains for friends and family, and it's beginner friendly.
Gentle tree skiing surrounds the yurt, with bigger slopes about a mile's climb on skins away and beyond. You'll find gentle glades, wide-open slopes, chutes and steeps, with both lower-risk slopes that rarely slide and true avalanche terrain to choose from depending on the day.
Access is 6 miles and 2,000 vertical feet from the winter trailhead off the Mirror Lake Highway, before the winter closure gate. The trail is typically packed by snowmobiles but can be deep powder after storms: about 45 minutes by snowmobile, or 4 to 6 hours on skins. The route does cross some small pieces of avalanche terrain. There is no winter road maintenance, so no wheeled vehicles when it's snow covered.
It sleeps 10, in four single and three double beds, with a wood-burning stove and oven, a full kitchen setup, a WAG outhouse, and the barrel sauna. All winter excursions must be guided and catered.
